What is a Thermistor?
An electrical resistor whose resistance is greatly reduced by heating, used for measurement and control. Thermistors, derived from the term thermally sensitive resistors, are a very accurate and cost-effective sensor for measuring temperature.
- Temperature Sensing: Thermistors are commonly used in digital thermometers, automotive applications (measuring engine coolant and oil temperatures), and household appliances (refrigerators, ovens).
- Overcurrent Protection: PTC thermistors are used as self-resetting overcurrent protectors in devices like power supplies and chargers.
- Inrush Current Limiting: NTC thermistors are used to limit the initial surge of current when an inductive load (like a motor) is turned on.
- Industrial Processes: They are used in industrial applications where precise temperature control is needed, such as in chemical reactors and semiconductor manufacturing.
- Other Applications: Thermistors are also found in environmental monitoring, communications and computing equipment, aerospace applications, and medical devices.
