ESPAR Coolant or Hydronic heaters are tied into the vehicles coolant system. These heaters, pre-heat the engine coolant to allow for effective vehicle starting in extreme climates. With some modifications, vehicles can be configured to allow for warming the passenger compartment through the existing vehicle heating system, allowing the Hydronic heaters to pre-heat both the engine and passenger compartment.

Kalori Alize Heater

The Kalori Alize heater is a compact and silent water blower heater that provides 3.4kW or 11.6K BTU of heat. Often used standalone for heating smaller spaces or used in a coolant heating circuit to provide supplementary heat (example below). It uses a 3 speed single wheel centrifugal blower using an onboard resistor pack.

  • Supplemental cab heating: They can be added to larger vehicles like RVs, buses, and transport trucks to provide additional heating for the driver or passenger compartments.
  • Engine pre-heating: They can be integrated with independent fuel fired coolant heaters, such as those from Eberspäecher or Webasto.

Installing a Kalori coolant heater involves integrating it into the truck’s existing engine coolant loop. While the steps vary by vehicle and heater model, the basic process is similar.

Green Freight Program

The Green Freight Program funds fleet retrofits of a variety of products that help to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Green Freight Program was launched in Q4 2022 by the Government of Canada to help fleets reduce their fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through fleet energy assessments, fleet retrofits, engine repowers, logistical best-practice implementation and the purchase of low carbon vehicles. It will be administered through two key funding streams. See below for details and Please note Stream 2 is Closed.

Green Freight Program (GFP) details

To take advantage of the program, applicants must first complete a fleet energy assessment through Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). NRCan offers up to 50% of the cost towards a third-party fleet energy assessment being completed. Applicants can also choose to conduct a self-assessment, following NRCan’s Assessment Guidelines. With a valid fleet assessment in hand, companies qualify to receive grants towards recommended fleet retrofit activities.

Providing grants towards Third-Party Fleet Energy Assessments and Truck/Trailer Equipment Retrofits.

For Fleet Energy Assessments, the program will provide up to 50% per company, to a maximum of $40,000.
For Truck/Trailer Equipment Retrofits, the program has established a list of eligible technologies and will provide up to 50% per device.
The maximum amount payable for eligible activities under Stream 1 is $250,000 per applicant.
Applicants will be reimbursed after submitting their invoices for eligible purchases.

Eberspaecher’s air heaters are independent of both the engine and the vehicle’s own HVAC system. They draw in either cool room air or outside air, heat this up and then deliver it to the interior of the vehicle. Air heaters are an excellent option for commercial vehicles of every type.
